さて、この古くさい暖炉のレンガを何とかしようと！

コンテンポラリーのBittsyには、すっかり浮いていたこの大きな一角

ペンキで塗るかと話していたところビル母の一言

「タイル張れば？」

タイル張りと言えば、ゲストルームのトイレの床・キッチンのカウンターに続き第３弾

要領をすっかり つかんで、テキパキと仕事を進めるビル




Bittsy was born in 1969 - 41 years old.
Most of her parts are dated.


The brick wall around a fireplace in the huge living room... we have tried to ignore the yuckiness, but the time has come.  
(or should I say "Bill's motivation has come back!)
We first thought painting over the brick would be the only choice, but Bill's mom gave us a great idea (as always), which is putting tiles over.
We went online and got the idea how much the damage would be.
The stone looking ceramic tiles we chose were only $1.57 per 12"x12".

①　レンガに水分を吸わせる

②　接着材をレンガに乗せていく

③　Spacerと呼ばれるもの（↑）をタイル間に置いて一定間隔を保つ

This little rubber piece is called "spacer"

This picture and the name explains everything, right?

Very simple but great.

④　ひたすら下から上へと繰り返し

梯子に上ったままのビルに、アシスタントの私は水を含んだスポンジやタイルやSpacerを渡していく（夜も遅くお互い疲労困憊。この頃になると会話が無くなり機械的な動きになる）

It was already 1:30 am.
Working on this project all day and getting exhausted...
Called it off for that night.
And the day 2 and 3...

⑤　はみ出した接着材を削ぎ取る

⑥　Spacerを外して、タイル間に灰色のグラウトを詰める

⑦　グラウトが乾くと、スポンジや布でタイルの上に付いた余分を拭き取る（ｘ４回リピート）

そして

And...Finally...

・

完成！！！！

3日間 お疲れさま

もうタイル張りは、ほぼプロです

Painting Wall...

さてさて、ひとつ前 書いたように、約１年前に既に買っていたSpring Hill という名前の色で壁を塗っていくことに・・・


ところで、アメリカ来るまで、天井を塗り替えるっていう考えが皆無だった
さすがDIY (Do It Yourself) の国、アメリカ

ペンキはプライマーが入ったもので、そのまま使えるもの
ところが「The more, the better」のビル
やっぱりプライマーを先に塗っていきます

これが新リビングの壁の色
いわゆる薄緑


壁の色がかわるだけで、一気に60年代から21世紀のモダンになった気がする


「ところで」第２弾
この壁にかけてる時計、直径90㌢くらいの巨大時計


この家に引っ越して早２年
やっとリビングでマッタリできる日が近づいているとは、少々感動

約半年振りの家の修復
2011年版スタート！




今回はリビングから再開


実はリビング用のテレビは既に買っていて、ゲットしたのは なんとおととしの11月
その日は、サンクスギビングの翌日の通称「ブラック・フライデイ − Black Friday」
この日はセール品が多くて有名
ちなみに人ごみが嫌いで、ブラック・フライデイにわざわざ買い物に行きたくない人には、その3日後に「サイバー・マンデイ − Cyber Monday」というのがある
読んで字のごとし
ネットショッピングのビッグセール日です


話は戻って・・・
買ってから一度もテレビを見ることのないまま（１回だけWiiを接続しただけ）このリビングはただの素通りスポットになっていましたが、やっとビルが手をかけ始めてくれました


まずは数十年前は真っ白だったであろう、クリーム色の天井を塗っていく

猫たちも興味津々です

ちなみに、この後ろの茶色の壁も近々塗り替えます

（ペンキは既に去年の春に購入済。もうすぐ1年・・・）

家の周りに木が多くて、家の中が比較的常に暗いので、なるべく内装は明るくしています

お疲れ様でした

Once in a Lifetime Miracle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

すごいことが起こった

超感動感激

映画とかアニメの世界だと思っていたことが実際に起こった!!!

ことの発端は、おなかを減らしたリス

鳥の餌を求め 目の前の木から いつものルートでこちら側に勢いよく

ジャーーンプ

そして、雪の深さ・冷たさに驚いて同じ木に即ジャンプ戻り

その時！！！！

あるものに気づいた私たち・・・

You know those cartoons in which somebody, or something, runs through a wall or a door (without opening it) and leaves behind a perfect cut-out of them self?  Well.......like the rest of us, I never imagined I'd ever actually see something quite like that for real!!!   However, as the photo proves, it is in fact possible.......albeit in snow and not a wooden door or sheet rock panel. 

Atsuko and I saw the whole thing go down from start to finish.  There he was gripping upside down onto an ancient hundred some odd foot oak tree, this very plump squirrel.  No doubt that it's rubenesque physique was the result of his/her raids on my always well stocked bird feeders!  This rodent is living the good life here at Bittsy Wright for sure, and so are all it's many friends and kin.  


So the jittery vermin nervously fidgets about for a while, as they do, and then finally after several minutes decides to take the leap of faith from the great oak onto the deck.  Because there is only about two feet separating the tree and deck, I believe in this case it was more the unknown outcome of it's jump onto a surface covered in at least eighteen inches of fluffy white snow, not height or distance that had our furry grey friend in a tizzy.  
After all that fuss the squirrel did just fine, really leaving it's mark as it were!   

Blizzard #3

そして吹雪第３弾！

今回の雪はさらさらでなく、少し重かったので雪かきが大変!!

丸々３時間ぶっ通し

電車が止まったので、会社は休みに！
結局45〜50㌢くらい積もった
今シーズンは大雪が多く、あちこちの市町村で雪かき予算が底をついたとニュースで言っていた


そして、以前載せたツララが どんどん長さの記録を伸ばして、現在約2㍍
ビルが床に付くのが見たいらしいので、このまま放置することに
ツララのそばで雪かきをしている私にビルの一言
「何があってもツララの真下では上を見ないように。体に当たったり、目に刺さったりしたら危ないから」
命がけの雪かき・・・

Lots of snow this year.
It's beautiful, but can't enjoy much once the physical job afterwards comes to mind...

Tears, physically and mentally

なんと なんと なんと！

今朝の気温・・・

マイナス17度！！！！

駅から会社までの10分の徒歩中、涙が出てくるわ
鼻の中が急激な温度差で痛いわ

ここまで寒けりゃ、水道のパイプの一部が凍ってしまって大変！
ベッドルーム隣接の洗面所とキッチンのシンクから水が出なくなってしまった（危険）

さっそく配管工の人に連絡をしました（＄＄＄こわ）

しかし、冬が長いNY・・・というか Tri-state

真剣 勘弁してほしい・・・

This morning's temperature...

Zero F!!!

Tears came out without my will.

Just painful.

The problem is water stopped in the master bathroom and the kitchen, where water pipes are exposed to outside.  We have a ranch that juts out from a rocky ledge.  It is on columns and so the entire space below the house is wide open and exposed to the cold.  This could be very much of a disaster.  If the ice inside of the pipe would explode, that could be horrible horrible horrible.  

We called up a plumber right away.

As you know, the plumbing job is VERY pricey.

On top of the high oil cost, this winter is trying my patience...

猫というものは・・・

猫というのは人間と同じで十人十色

それぞれ好みも違えば、性格も違います

なので

「猫は構われるのが好きじゃないから、つまらない」

というのは大きな間違い！

ゾーイは確かに、一人で勝手に遊んでるタイプ

いっぱいのキャットフードとお気に入りのイスがあれば満足

おもちゃをくわえて持ってきて、遊べアピールする時も超控えめ

何にでも興味津々で、屋根裏探索が大好き

ところがこのジジは正反対

おもちゃを口にくわえたまま、家中に響く声で「遊べー、遊べー」と訴える

抱っこをしろと二足立ちになる

注目されるのが大好きで、しょっちゅう姉ゾーイを攻撃する割に（容赦なく噛み付くのでジジの口の回りはゾーイの毛だらけ）他人が家に来ると隠れて出てこない、典型的な内弁慶外地蔵タイプ

そんな二人の日課が

毎日 仲良く並んで観察してます

Killer icicles!!!!!!!!!!!!!

吹雪後、屋根に積もった雪が溶け始めて、みごとなツララを作りました。

樋がぼろぼろなので、あちこちから水が流れていろんなところにツララができます

これって、落ちてきたら間違いなく刺さるよなー

これ、ちなみに玄関

地面は溶けかけた雪が更に凍り、ツルツル氷状態

もし他人が我が家の敷地内で怪我でもして訴えてきたらの場合の弁護士費用は、住宅保険の追加として購入してるから、安心なのです

先週、家から北へ1時間弱のKent へ滝を見に行きました

真冬の滝・・・寒かった

足元が滑る滑る

さて、出会った当時はガリガリに痩せていて

「自分は一生太らない体型。実際カロリーオフとかカロリーカットとかいうものを食べる気がしない。自分には生涯必要なし！」

と ほざいていたビルですが、最近おなか回りが気になってきた様子

写真を撮られるときは、息を止めておなかを引っ込めます

超胸張り、笑

When I first met him in 1999, he weighed only 145 lbs.

He insisted he wouldn't get fat forever.

He even said it was impossible even if he tried.

Well..., he is 34 years old now.

When I take a picture, he sucks in his belly and stops breathing.

Hmm!

Bronx Botanical Garden

やや前になりますが、友達家族とNYのブロンクスにある

ブロンクス植物園

に行きました。

NYでの観光名所のひとつ、ブロンクス動物園のまん前

グリーンハウスの中に、NYの建築物を全て植物で作ったものが熱帯雨林の植物に混じって展示されていました。

自由の女神・私が毎日通勤に使っているGrand Central Terminal・超有名 ブルックリン橋・マンハッタン橋・メトロポリタン美術館・Radio City ・パトリック大聖堂・ヤンキーススタジアム といろいろ！ありました。

10 dyas ago, we went to Bronx Botanigal Garden to see their annual holiday train show (ended a couple days ago!)

All historic buildings in NY were constructed entirely of natural materials: nuts, tree bark, fruits, pinecones, and leaves.

枝とか実とか葉っぱとかツタとかで出来ている大作

そして、すごいものを発見

なんと5㍍先という至近距離の茂みで食事中の鷹でした

食べてるものは野うさぎ

自然好きのビルと、気持ち悪い好きの私は別の理由で「わーー」と言いながら、鷹がうさぎの腸を引っ張り出して食べてる様子を、長々と双眼鏡でじっくり観察

「いいもん見させてもらった」と満足しました、笑。

And we saw something amazing.

It was a red tailed hawk eating a rabbit only 15 feet away from the path!

Obviously some wild animals are tamed and used to being around humans there.

Although being a little uncomfortable with us observing him with our binoculars for a loooooong time, he kept pulling off guts and all that from the rabbit.

We (Bill: nature lover, Atsuko: grotesque lover) surely enjoyed the live nature special on our Animsl Planet!
