Tennis Exhibition Match - 夢のライバルマッチ

チケットを取ったのは、遡ること去年の７月

やっとこの2月28日、マディソン・スクエア・ガーデン（コンサートをしたりスポーツ会場になったりする超有名アリーナ）で開催されたテニスのエキシビジョン・マッチに上司の船津さんと同僚のLarryとで行ってきました

Last Monday, I went to a tennis exhibition called "the BNP Paribas showdown" @Madison Square Garden in NYC with my co-workers.

It's definitely the advantage to live close to a big city.

It was a humid and warm day, and I was walking outside in a tank top at night.

And a couple of days later, 32F...

Weird.

７時からの開始に向けて、観客がぞろぞろと

伝説のアメリカ人プラーヤーであるマッケンロー・レンドル・アガシ・サンプラスの４人が揃うとあって、座席はソールドアウトだったらしい

１万７千人を超える観客

This featured two of the greatest rivalries in all of tennis when John McEnroe faced off against Ivan Lendl to be followed with Pete Sampras taking on Andre Agassi. 

Over 17,000 of all seats were sold out!

そして、なんとなんと・・・

こういう特別イベントには絶対 芸能人がいる！

と１列目2列目に目星をつけて、持参した双眼鏡で有名人がいないかと探してみると・・・

X−ファイルに主役で出てた、ニューヨーク出身のデイビッド・ドゥカブニーとその奥さんで女優のテア・レオニの姿発見

and

Gossipy me was looking around the audience with Bill's binoculars...

And found David Duchovny and his wife Téa Leoni on the first row!

My co-workers didn't understand my excitement at all, unfortunately :(

... And Nancy Kerrigan, who I don't care so much either.

全くドゥカブニーに興味のない二人に挟まれ、一人興奮

あと、フィギアスケートのメダリスト、ナンシー・ケリガンも来てた

インタビューを受けてたから認識出来たものの・・・

彼女は1994年に起こったトーニャ・ハーディング事件で超有名になった「あの人は今？！」的な人

非常に懐かしい

そして、国歌斉唱（全員起立）

アメリカの国家って力強くってかっこよい

日本の君が代とは大違い・・・

ビル曰く、米国民全てが歌詞を覚えてるらしい

逆に「なんで自分の国歌の歌詞を覚えてないの？」と不思議がる

まあ、あんなに天皇万歳的な歌じゃなかったらねぇ

The national anthem...

The US national anthem is a good one unlike the Japanese one...

Japanese anthem "Kimigayo" has a dark melody and implies a symbol of imperialism and military.  We feel the all idea from world war II has been carried over and that we are forced to be that way.  (Germany changed their flag and national anthem after WWII, by the way)  That's why a lot of us hate it and most of people in my generation don't even know the whole lyrics even though it's one of the shortest ones in the world.

そのあと、グロリア・ゲイノーという歌手のパフォーマンスあり

1979年リリースの「I will survive」っていう聞いたことある曲でした

And the performance by Gloria Gaynor

私はマッケンロー世代ではなく、もっぱらサンプラスの大ファン

テレビで見てた生サンプラスが目の前でアガシと対戦してる姿を見るだけで、感動した

39歳でも動きは俊敏でサーブの切れもすごかった

結構この４人が揃うことがまれらしく、すごいエキシビジョンだったんだなーと今になってやっと実感

そりゃ席も全席埋まるか

でもなにも月曜の夜にやらんでも・・・

おかげで家に帰ると１時半

家が遠いのは不便

暖炉を初めて使ってみることに・・・

Religious ceremony?

No no no.

First time to use our fireplace!

For Bill, it's really special 

because he DIY-ed almost all as you witnessed here.

And for me, it's really special 

because this is my very first fireplace to own.

煙突のふたを開けて、煙の逃げ道を作ります

火の粉が上がらなくなり、薪が真っ赤になったら煙突のふたを半分に閉めます

ふたの開け閉めは暖炉の中にある部品で

おーー、ちゃんと正座してる！

日本に来るまではできなかったのにね

この日から、帰宅して毎晩数時間は薪を焼べています

これで光熱費削減に期待！！

Bento Box

私が働いてるのが日系会社とあって、昼前になると手作り弁当の売り子が会社に来てくれます

たいてい2, 3パターンあって、値段はだいたい $6.50〜$8

アメリカ人は手を出さないけど、日本人スタッフ・駐在員は毎日お世話になっているようです

私は99.9％弁当持参なのですが、この日は自弁当を持ってくるのが面倒で、外に買いにいくのも面倒で、弁当を買ってみました

（今の会社に勤めて2年強になりますが、買った回数は４回くらい。毎回「お！新入社員の方ですか？」と言われる、笑）

おいしかったー

ところでイクラって、ロシア語のイクラーから来てるって知らんかった！

あと、合羽（カッパ）・ミイラ・金平糖・トタン（トタン屋根の）・ピン（ピンからキリまでの）ってポルトガル語で、ペンキ・レッテルがオランダ語で、ワッペン・メルヘン・ゼッケン・ゲレンデ・ギプス・エネルギッシュがドイツ語で、アンケート・デッサンがフランス語で、カンパ・セイウチがロシア語って知ってた人？

特にエネルギッシュなんか、エネルギー + ish と思ってた！

ですので、こういうカタカナを英語圏で使っても通じませんのでご注意を

そして、これは番外編

毎週木曜の午後には靴磨きの人が会社に来てくれます

チップ込みで$5らしい

こちらが仕事をしている間に磨いてくれているらしい

ま、私（ビジネスカジュアル）は一生お世話になることはないだろうけど

Bento

Since I work for a Japanese company, Bento guy comes to our company in the morning everyday.

Normally he brings a couple of variations and the price ranges from $6.50 to $8.

Japanese workers appreciate it so much.

I have bought the bento box maybe 4 or 5 times from this guy in the last 2+ years (I bring lunch always), and they are soooooo tasty!

The one I got the other day was salmon and egg roe over rice and chicken.

Hmmm, felt like Japan for a min.

Midnight missions

ビルの次のプロジェクトは、炉棚と呼ばれる暖炉の前飾り

Our (should I say Bill's? I'm way far from being handy...) next project is making the fireplace mantel.

暖炉の回りの飾りは含めずに、真上の飾り棚だけで普通に買うと５万円くらいするので、近くの材木屋に行ってみました

そこのオーナーはインディアン（native American）

パウワウというインディアンのお祭り以外で生粋のインディアンに会ったことがなかったので、感動した〜

ジャック・ニコルソンの映画「カッコーの巣の上で」に出てたインディアンに似てた

（髪は短かったけど）

そのシャイなオーナーから現金で楓の板（200×30×8㌢）を購入

そしてビルはその粗い表面を削ること４時間・・・

First we checked on-line to see the price.

The average was $350 to $400.

With the shipping fee, it'd be around $500.

PRICEY!!!!! Heart attack!!!

So we went to a saw mill in the neighborhood and found a 80x15x3" big maple piece there.

We liked the natural looking of it with bark on the side.

Since the surface was rough, he sanded, sanded, sanded, and sanded for over 4 hours...

(Does anyone like this wall paper in the basement that our previous house owner left???  I don't!!!!!)

その間、私は2010年の確定申告準備へ

（締切4月18日）

過去2年間、申告内容が複雑だったので、会計士へ依頼していましたが、今年はそこまでややこしい項目がないだろうしと、お金をセーブするために、自分ですることに・・・

On the other hand, I was working on filing 2010 tax return!

We had tax accountants for the last 2 years.

(BTW, don't go to the H&R Blocks!!!  Most of them are seasonal workers. They overcharge us!!!!  And the guy who was in charge of us - he was an IT guy actually - made a mistake with our filing 2 years ago!!!!!)

This year, we didn't need to get any tax deductions other than our mortgage, so I simply didn't want to bother spending extra money for the tax accountant.

Cutting the brackets with a dremel tool so that we can minimize the ugly steel to be shown.

替わって私の仕事場

アメリカは、国 (Federal) と州 (state) の両方 別々に確定申告をしないといけません

ビルも私も、仕事はニューヨーク州で住居はコネチカット州

つまり、州税は仮にNYに払っているけど、コネチカットに転送しないといけない

なので、うちの場合は1）国　2）NY　3）コネチカットの3カ所に申告する必要があるわけで、とりあえず面倒くさい！！！！！！！

最初の1,2時間はご機嫌に進めていたものの、途中から うっとうしくなってきた

Back to my (Atsuko) area...

Our employment is in NY and residence is in CT.

In other words, we 

need to file state taxes both in NY and CT.

そして戻りまして、ビルの仕事場・・・

23時半頃、炉棚が完成した模様

じゃじゃーん

Back to Bill in the basement...

He completed around 11:30pm.

Here is our new mantelpiece.

40〜50㌕くらいの重さ

頭に落ちてきたら脳しんとうものです

強力な部品で固定してるので大丈夫ですが・・・

そんなこんなで、私がネット申告完了したのは夜中の１時半

この時点でほぼ完了

あとは、原本を税務署に送れば、これで終了〜

日本みたいに、会社が年末調整くらいはやってくれたらいいのに！！

I finished the tax around 1:30am.

Successfully e-filed.

After several head scratches, we both completed our tasks!!!!!

We did it!

Tired but what a nice feeling after a job is done with satisfaction, right?

The third wheel or she's just a poor thing?

私の携帯カメラではやはり限界があり過ぎる・・・

今回撮りたかったのは雪ではなく（気温の低い日が続いているので、ずいぶん前に積もった雪が溶けずに、今ではかき氷状態になっているという・・・）池にいる鴨たち３羽

It's really hard to see what's going on here on Gamera Pond (Bill named this pond after his favorite movie character because we have snapping turtles in summer), but there are 3 ducks swimming together.

日本でもお馴染み、カモ科のマガモのツガイ

A Mallard couple (↑)

そのマガモのカップルと一緒に仲良く泳いでいたのは

オシドリ属のアメリカオシのメス1羽（↑）

And a female wood duck（↑）

(FYI, below is a male wood duck.  The male is one of the most spectacularly plumed water fowl in the world ↓)

ちなみに以前にもブログ上で紹介したことがありますが、これ（↑）がアメリカオシのオス

超鮮やかで、それこそ民芸品チック

鴨がパートナーなしで一人でいるのに、考えられる理由は一つ・・・

アメリカオシのオスは誰か（人間）に捕獲されたか撃たれたかで、殺された可能性が高い

羽毛が鮮やかなアメリカオシは狩猟されることも多く、1900年初頭にはもう少しで絶滅しそうになったとか

ここ数日３羽で仲良く遊んでるところを見ると、このメスは単なるお邪魔虫ではないようですが、ちょっとかわいそうな境遇・・・

Why this female wood duck is alone is obvious...

The male must have been shot and killed.

First I thought she was the third wheel but realized she was just a poor thing that lost her partner...

We'll keep you posted on what happens with our lonely woodress.

Living room renovation cont'd

リビングに暖炉があるのに、まだ一度も試したことなし

引っ越して２年になるのに、前住人の燃やした木材とか灰とかがそのまま残ってたり・・・

暖炉のドアが、1969年仕様の気持ち悪い金色だったので、シルバーにしてモダンに変えました

中がまたまた古くさいレンガだったので、それも黒にスプレーペイントして

煙突内にリスやらアライグマが巣を作って住み着いているかと思いきや、きれいなもんだったので、すぐにでも使えそう

（ここら辺の長い冬は４月頭まで続きます）

ビルは暖炉と共に育った典型的な東海岸アメリカ人ですが、私にとっては生まれて初めての暖炉で、テンションが上がります




More renovation!


It's amazing how painting job can change the whole room's appearance.
We Japanese don't DIY or change the interior design or those kind of things in general, so it's still new and fun to me.


Bill painted the fireplace door in silver (used to be in yucky gold) and inside of the bookshelf in blue.


Gettin' better all the time ♬


Would love to buy a couch set, but the compensation that I was promised at work last September hasn't deposited yet.  Ugh!

Happy Valentine's + Anniversary

ビル父からはバラの花束をもらい、そしてビルを含め数人からチョコをもらい、そしてそして同僚にはお昼に連れて行ってもらいました

アメリカではご存知の通り、バレンタインは男性 → 女性へのイベントです

電車で隣に座った人は、花束を持っていました

帰って奥さんに渡すんでしょう

ビルも、おばあちゃん・ビル母・妹・姪にバレンタインのカードを渡していました

去年は、それに加え、ビル父・妹のダンナさんにも渡していました

なんでやねん（失笑）

今年はカードを買う場に私もいたので、無事止めました

そして、非常に私事ですが、今日は私たちの結婚記念日

今日で丸々6年、７年目に入りました

偶然バレンタインが記念日となり、覚えやすいもんです

出会って12年目

早いもので

Today was not only Valentine's Day but our 6th wedding anniversary.

We actually have 3 wedding anniversaries:

1. marriage registration day in Japan (2/14)

2. wedding day in Japan (5/3)

3. wedding day in America (10/8)

We decided to go with 2/14 for our anniv. because 1) it's the earliest day, 2) it's Valentine's day when most couples celebrate and finally 3) we simply tend to forget other days (this is actually the biggest reason).

（普段は弟ジジがボスで、ゾーイはジジが食べ終わるのを待っていないといけない）

たった今、リビングからの光景

（携帯からの動画なので、かなり荒い）

6頭の野生の鹿です

裏庭の木とか植物を食べに総出で降りてきたらしい

こんなもんでよければ、幾らでも食べてくださいよ〜

どうやら、全員家族らしい

（鹿は家族一団で移動するので）

6頭とは初めて

ビル先生曰く、冬の間オスの角は（自然に）取れるらしい

春になればまた生えてくるとのこと

なので、この6頭の性別は一見して分からず

しかし、超至近距離 ♬

6 deer came down to Bittsy.

Apparently they all are the same family because they move around as a family unit.

I have seen 4 together (mother and 3 of her children), but 6?!

According to Bill, a buck sheds his antlers during the winter time (and grows the new rack for the next season).  So it's impossible to see which one is male and female now.
